Why news is the best test category

Analysis: news channels are the ideal canary for any setup. They broadcast around the clock (no “event not started” ambiguity), keep stable names and identifiers (so EPG matching actually resolves), and change sources less often than sports or movies. When a new player, a new list, or a new network is in doubt, a news channel gives the cleanest yes/no signal: if news plays, the pipeline works and the fault lies with specific sources; if news fails, the fault is systemic. URL, format, network, or app.

24/7 channels vs event-driven coverage

“News” in public lists mixes two different animals: rolling 24/7 channels (always on, predictable, ideal test signals) and event-driven feeds that appear around elections, disasters, and summits, then vanish. Analysis: build the permanent setup on 24/7 channels and treat event feeds as bonuses. Event feeds have the highest rot rate in the whole directory because their entire reason to exist expires. When an event feed dies a week after the event, that's the lifecycle working, not a failure to fix.

Using news lists to validate EPG joins

  1. Import a news list and attach your XMLTV guide (verified first with the EPG test).
  2. Check guide data on two or three major news channels. Because their tvg-id values are the most consistently maintained, success here proves the join mechanism works.
  3. Only then extend to volatile categories: remaining “no information” rows are identifier mismatches in those lists, not a broken guide pipeline.

EPG attachment is covered step by step in the setup guide; the procedure is identical whether the list is news or anything else.

FAQ

Are news streams more reliable? Relatively. 24/7 channels with stable sourcing fail less often than event or catalog content. “Relatively” still demands timestamped checks, not trust.

Can I rely on a news list as an always-on fallback? Yes, and you should: a small stable news list alongside volatile category lists means something always plays while you diagnose the rest.

Why do some news channels lack guide data? Identifier drift between the list and the guide source. Re-sync both files from the same period rather than editing IDs by hand.

Business and finance news: covered? Major business channels appear in broad lists; niche market-data feeds rarely do. Verify tickers and business channels by name before promising them to anyone.

What about weather channels? National weather channels surface regularly; hyperlocal weather almost never does in public lists. Treat weather as a bonus, not a planning input.

Do news lists work in other languages? Yes. Multilingual news is among the most stable international content. Language-specific news is a good first test when exploring a new region's sources.

How these entries are checked

Methodology: status badges appear only with a real check timestamp; until then entries show as Unchecked with unknown counts. Channel counts come from parsed data, never estimates, and HTTP 200 on a playlist URL never implies every stream plays. Third-party sources are attributed and their licensing is stated only when known. The full methodology — badge meanings, freshness reading, and what we never claim — is on the main directory page.
